- The Ka Transition Project (KaTP) was a technology development, integration, and demonstration initiative to facilitate the transition of SN and GN users to the NASA allocated Ka-band frequencies. The KaTP Project was successfully completed in FY-04. KaTP activities included:
- Developing a new SN IF service using the TDRS H,I,J 650 MHz-wide channel (KaSAR-wide)
- Developing a GN ground terminal to demonstrate GN Ka-band operations and provide for future commercialization
- Providing a test bed within the SN and GN to demonstrate new communications technologies
- bandwidth efficient modulations
- high data rate receivers
- data processing/storage devices
- Providing the impetus and confidence to flight and ground system customers by demonstrating candidate Ka-band solutions
- KaTP Project Milestones:
- System Requirements Review occurred July 2000
- System Design Review occurred December 2000
- Hardware and software integration completed December 2002
- SN 600 Mbps demonstration occurred December 2002
- GN 600 Mbps demonstration occurred during separate test periods between February - October 2003
- SN Transition Readiness Review/Operations Readiness Review completed in February 2003
